UK label MEGA DODO, celebrating the spirit of music just about extinct with style, have been a refreshing addition to the select field of indie labels catering for those with a taste for psychedelic pop and rock, mainly revolving around this type of music as it was made back in the 1960’s. “Evolver” is an EP they released in 2014 as a free download, where those curious about the label can sample some of their artists and the kind of music the label release.

Green Question Mark opens this EP with Fortune Teller, a tight, short and vibrant garage rock style affair with dark toned, almost textured guitars and organ in the driving seat, with some clever lyrics telling a charming little story. Octopus Syng and their If You Were a Flower is more in line with psychedelic folk music, sporting acoustic guitars as the key instrument in a laid-back, dampened and again fairly brief song. The third track comes courtesy of Icarus Peel, this one a longer creation with an elongated more distinctly atmospheric laden psychedelic opening sequence that settles into more of a garage rock type of pop song and then revisiting the more psychedelic flavored opening theme again. Mordecai Smyth then concludes this EP with a tight, vibrant 60’s type pop song of the kind fans of The Kinks and perhaps to some extent also fans of The Beatles will hum along to with his charming acoustic guitar, organ and harmonica driven Dark Haired Douglas.

All in all a fine and well assembled EP that presents the Mega Dodo label and their artist fairly well, and while perhaps not covering all the stylistic bases of their artists those who are curious about the label should get a fairly good impression as far as what they are all about by giving this EP a spin.
