Probably best known for his work with established award-winning UK Blues rock band The Mustangs, Adam is back with his third solo album, following on from the critically acclaimed ‘Love & Wine’ and ‘Rainbird’. I was going to write something fairly scathing about the rather pedestrian drumming that accompanies some of these songs, but when I realised not only did Adam write all the songs, but also played all the instruments, I felt that would be rather churlish as real drums are always better than any machine. But, the reason I was going to moan is that this is the only element which lets down a wonderful album, which I have enjoyed playing so very much indeed.

We are treated to the full gamut of a confident songwriter and performer, and I can’t work out if his primary instrument is piano or guitars as he is accomplished with both, providing whatever is needed for the job at hand. He also plays violin when the time is right, had loads of acoustic guitar but also brings in electric at the right moment, while mandolin is also a further layer. In some ways it reminds me of Richard Thompson, although the songs tend to be more commercial, less angular (and without the out and guitar brilliance that no-one, even Page, can match). The album itself is themed loosely on the restless night of a lost soul. “We all have those nights when you just can’t get to sleep”, says Adam, “and everything from your love life to your work keeps you awake, and you end up questioning and going over things in minute detail, ‘til the next thing you know the birds are singing and you‘ve been awake all night.”

It is lush, it is simple, it is packed full of great songs and performances and is an album which any fan of singer-songwriter, folk or folk rock, should really investigate asap.
