This release sees guitarist MacDonald joining forces with Kim Richmond (alto sax, soprano sax and flute), Harvey Newmark (bass) and Paul Kreibich (drums), so a totally different line-up to ‘Organisms’ which he released earlier this year. That one saw heavy emphasis being given the to Hammond B3 Organ (by Carey Frank), but here he is working strongly with arranger Richmond. The album itself is a collection of MacDonald originals and some jazz covers, and one of the strengths is definitely the arrangements which really allow Richmond to shin – in fact, if one was to play this album without knowing who was behind it then it would be easy to surmise that the band leader is on sax, not guitar. But, it is MacDonald who provides the deft touch and easy manner which allows everyone else to display their chops.

It is a very easy album to listen to, as even when Kreibich is taking a well deserved solo during “San Rafael”, and Richmond is taking a break, it is the guitar of MacDonald in the background who keeps the music moving forward without ever really being in your face. He allows himself a solo piece, “The Things We Did Last Summer”, which as with the rest of the album is played with delicacy and a great deal of picked chords as well as little runs. It is a summery Jazz album, clean and swinging, with a groove and a feeling that the guys are content and all know their place within the structure. Light and refreshing, this is a very easy to listen to album indeed.
