The DiN ambient label was set up by Ian Boddy in 1999 to release ambient electronica that bridged the gap between the analogue sound of the early 70’s synth pioneers and the digital soundscapes of the more experimental modern exponents of electronic music.

Various Artists: Structure and Forces

Introducing a new sub-label, Tone Science, from the DiN label.

DiN was initially set up in 1999 by well known UK synthesist Ian Boddy to bridge the gap between the analog music of his heritage and the emerging digital possibilities of the future. Tone Science is set up to feature artists and performers working in the field of modular synthesis. The first release “Module No.1 Structure and Forces” is a compilation album featuring nine artists from different musical backgrounds with the common thread being that all the tracks were composed entirely with a modular synth system.

The album opens and closes with the ambient soundscapes of two tracks by DivKid and Matthew Shaw who run the well respected Modular Podcast. Boddy himself follows the opening track with an extension to his original Tone Science album with another aleatoric self-playing composition in “Tone 6”. Paul Lawler and Nigel Mullaney are both heavily involved in library music and soundtrack composition and their two multi-layered compositions showcase the cinematic possibilities of the modular synth world. The remaining four tracks are more rhythmic in nature with the beautiful ambient washes of “If Wishes Came True” by Scanner leading into the hypnotic ostinato patterns of “Ghatam” by Richard Scott. French Buchla wizard Lyonel Bauchet ramps up the intensity with an elegantly constructed pulsing track before Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle) ends the rhythmic proceedings with the grimy, dubby bass powered “Frieze Relief”.

Track list:
Natural Minor Sines – by DivKid

ARC: Fleet

“Fleet” is the 7th live album by the duo ARC – DiN label boss Ian Boddy and Mark Shreeve. This mix of live electronics underpinned by huge slabs of analog sequencing was recorded at the E-Scape Electronic Music Festival in the UK in May 2017. The seven tracks, complete with enthusiastic audience ambience, spans almost 78 minutes for the next best thing to actually being there!

What is most evident on this ARC album are the richly harmonic themes, notably in the opening track which builds and grows through a series of gorgeous melodies to its climax. “Crux” opens with a spooky ambient section before ramping up to a live sequencer fest that lovers of Berlin School electronica will lap up. The final piece, “Howl”, starts with a whisper but finishes up as a real sledgehammer that will surely become a favorite for ARC aficionados.

Track list:
Fleet
Soar
Surge

Ian Boddy & Erik Wøllo: Meridian

“Meridian” is the third collaborative project between DiN label boss Ian Boddy and renowned Norwegian composer/guitarist Erik Wøllo. Their previous two projects were the duos debut release,“Frontiers” (DiN39), followed by their live performance at the Electronic Circus Festival V on “EC12” (DiNDDL16).

Both Boddy & Wøllo are prolific composers and bring their wealth of experience to bear on this sophisticated, cinematic release. Playing like a travelogue to an undiscovered land, the duo effortlessly mixes the analog synth & string textures of Boddy with the intricate interlocking patterns of Wollo’s guitar.

Once again this duo show the mastery of their craft both as composers and musicians to produce a stunning album full of sonic imagery and beautiful harmonies.
