Phase IV is the impending new full-length from Vienna-based industrial post-rock unit. PHAL:ANGST. Recorded and co-produced by Alexandr Vatagin (Valeot Records, Slon, Tupolev, Port Royal, Werner Kitzmüller) and mastered by New York-based acclaimed sound engineer Alex Psaroudakis, Phase IV includes two remixes: “Despair II” remixed by Will Brooks aka MC Dälek of Dälek and “The Books,” remixed by industrial metal pioneer JK Flesh aka Justin Broadrick of Godflesh.

This week Phal:Angst released a video for the remixed version of ‘The Books’. Watch it HERE

In advance of its release later this month, CVLT Nation debut the visual accompaniment to “The Books (JK Flesh Remix)” alongside a stream of the original track, “They Won’t Have To Burn The Books When Noone Reads Them Anyway”, which you can also listen to HERE

“I feel broken inside… I feel fragile inside… I feel anger in my blood! I feel the emotional sonic wave that is the new song from PHAL:ANGST called “The Books,” remixed by JK FLESH. This song has so many textures it’s almost to hard to put into words, but I will say it needs to be heard by many.”CVLT Nation

Viennese band Phal:Angst’s quite quirky signature sound is taken to the next level on their fourth album Phase IV. Since the band’s foundation in 2006 this unique blend of electronic industrial and post rock has made the band hard to classify but highly individual.

The cinematographic, epic tracks on Phase IV are inspired by industrial / electronic artists like FRONT 242, COIL, THROBBING GRISTLE, NURSE WITH WOUND, KRAFTWERK, EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, film works by ANGELO BADALAMENTI & DAVID LYNCH, JOHN CARPENTER and GOBLIN as well as guitar driven bands like EARTH, BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE, JESU, NEUROSIS or MOGWAI.

The mood is generally dystopian and melancholic, however some sunny spells occasionally break the gloom. As before, you will not find any standard song structures, but tracks that take their time to develop, grow, mutate and tilt. Visuals turn the band’s live shows into intense multimedia performances. For these films Phal:Angst use found footage-, cut & paste- and rearrange-techniques and original material.

Like critically acclaimed Black Country (2014) Phase IV was recorded by Alexandr Vatagin (Valeot Records, Slon, Tupolev, Port Royal, Werner Kitzmüller) who also served as the co-producer this time. It was mastered by Alex Psaroudakis, mastering engineer from Brooklyn/New York, who worked for Sterling Sound (one of the world’s top mastering studios) till 2017 and has been a freelancer since then. He won 3 Latin Grammy Nominations, 1 Goya, Best Jazz LP at the Akademia Music Awards, he worked for BUSTA RHYMES, KALASH, GREEN VALLEY and many others.

Following their release tradition this album also includes some remixes. This time the band managed to make one of their dreams come true and get remixes from artists who have inspired the band substantially. One is by industrial-metal pioneer JUSTIN BROADRICK (GODFLESH) who also made substantial impacts in grindcore (NAPALM DEATH), post rock (JESU) and experimental hip hop / dubstep (TECHNO ANIMAL). The second one is by WILL BROOKS aka MC DÄLEK from DÄLEK, who revolutionized hip hop by merging it with ambient, noise- & krautrock at the beginning of the millenium.
