Project band THE GREEN QUESTION MARK is a collaboration between    Marrs Bonfire, Icarus Peel, Mordecai Smyth and Crystal Jacqueline. As far as I know they have a sole production to their name: The four track single “Pegasus” released through UK label Mega Dodo Records in 2013.

The defining aspect of this single is that it is one consisting solely of cover material. Rolling Stones She’s a Rainbow is given a light toned rendition with a wandering piano motif as the central feature, with steady rhythms, what sounds like brass bursts and some fleeting instances of strings applied, including a calmer piano and strings only insert. Syd Barrett’s Lucy Leave comes across as a darker toned, garage rock oriented creation in this take, with a nifty circulating bass and drums backbone, smooth guitar licks, psych-tinged vocals and a pleasant, melodic guitar solo. The Hollies Pegasus is in this take a light toned, almost ethereal and innocent sounding construction, with plucked guitars, gentle flute, Mellotron textures and wind synths.

Concluding this single is Grapefruit’s Elevator. In this take with a brief psych-drenched opening, and then alternating between a tight and compact verse segment with guitars and organ and a hypnotic, repetitive drums and guitar driven midsection which is repeated at the end.

A charming single that should interest those with a general fascination for cover versions and in particular fans of one or more of the bands and tracks covered, but also a production that should have a fairly broad appeal towards those with an interest in 60’s psychedelic pop and rock I suspect.

My rating: 85/100
