US band SCHIZO FUN ADDICT is an entity that keeps a fairly low profile, at least as far as internet presence is concerned, but those in the know have been able to by their albums ever since 2000. They have participated on a number of productions issued by UK specialist label Fruits de Mer Records in the past few years, and on this occasion they have opted to release a two track single through this label, named Theme from “Suspiria” after the A-side track of this 7 inch vinyl.

This A-side track is a gloriously psychedelic dripping constellation, book-ended by a frail, delicate piano theme, with a nifty harpsichord and oscillating effects recurring theme, the latter possibly provided by the good old theremin, with a tight, driving  bass and drums driven main theme sporting riff reverbs, harpsichord and the aforementioned oscillating electronic sounds as a layered psychedelic coating, with a brief naive sounding backing vocal detail as the icing on the cake, so to speak.

The B-side consist of the track In the Long Run, lifted from the soundtrack to “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”. In this version this song comes across as a naive sounding piece of 60’s psychedelic pop, where dampened, steady drums and a distinctly melodic bass motif leads the way. Gently resonating guitar details and trumpet fanfares supplements the often laid back, almost sleepy female lead vocals, and the psychedelic effects remains dampened but present throughout, rising in intensity only in the final parts of the song. A composition that in this version would have been a fitting soundtrack for just about any movie focusing on the truly peaceful-minded idealists you’ll find in many psychedelic environments I guess, uplifting and joyful music gently coated with otherworldly sounding details.

All in all a strong and compelling single this one, where some will love the main track and others be more thrilled about the B-side. Personally I’ll admit to belong in the former rather than latter category.
