US band HEAVY GLOW was formed back in 2008, and have a handful of singles and EPs and one full length album to their name so far, with a second full length production in the works. “Mine All Mine” was released as a vinyl single in the late summer of 2013, and presumably the A and B side of this single will be found on what is their forthcoming sophomore album at the time of writing.

What we’re dealing with here is a tight, high quality hard rock band that most likely know more about 70’s hard rock than I’ll ever do, and with a certain affection for the psychedelic flavored variety of it as well. Not the far out psychedelic hard rock mind you, but rather the kind that once upon a time was played quite a lot on radio in the years before Clear Channel and just about any other radio of note jointly decided to destroy radio as a medium for art and entertainment.

The A side is the one with a strong public appeal, with light toned fuzzy riffs, psychedelic dripping guitar solo details, a nice alteration between sparse and layered arrangements, a strong driving bass beneath and a singalong chorus of the kind that I’d suspect will be established as an anthem concert favorite already. If not it should be.

Personally I’m more fond of the B side of this single however. Headhunter is the name of this track, which is a darker toned affair of the kind that is closer to the roots of all rock, the blues details are more distinct in general and for the underlying bass motif in particular. The guitar riffs are still warm and fuzzy, but not psychedelic as such on this case, but with an effective repeated psychedelic dripping guitar solo detail and distanced calm vocals there’s no denying a certain psychedelic sheen to this song as well, even if there’s a tad more blues at hand as well.

A splendidly entertaining single it is, and one to seek out if you’re a fan of psychedelic hard rock of the 70’s variety, and of a kind that by chance or by accident should have a fairly wide appeal. And if their forthcoming album is of a similar quality, that production should make it to a substantial number of “must by” lists fairly soon.

My rating: 90/100
