US project FEEL NO OTHER appears to be the creative vehicle of composer and musician Claudia Gregory. To my knowledge the EP simply named “Five Minute EP” is the first ever production to be released under this moniker, and is a contribution to US label Silber Records “5 in 5” conceptual series of productions.

While some may be daunted by the task of creating a 5 minute long EP with a grand total of 5 tracks on it, Claudia Gregory’s approach to the task is exemplary. She has manged to create five defined songs with a clear opening, development and conclusion, songs that comes across as true songs despite the narrow confines one operates under when exploring this concept.

From the tantalizing circulating drum patterns, odd electronic noises and vocals on opening piece Svnoyi Edohi, to the mandolin (or possibly banjo?) and psychedelic guitars, vocals and textured post rock style string instrument at the end for March Towards the West, the slower and more dramatic symphonic oriented instrumental March Towards the East, the frail and lo-fi vocals and clock sound of Pan’s Shadow to the concluding accordion, banjo/mandolin and marching drums that supports the vocals on Toy Soldiers, this last song also with a more intense concluding phase that clearly shows how this song as a defined start, a development phase and a conclusion.

Just where to place this EP in terms of style is the challenging part, somewhere in between electronic music and post rock sounds like a fair shot, with liberal amounts of folk music flavoring, but the songs are all highly enjoyable affairs, and apart from the more sparse Pan’s Shadow brilliant is a word I find appropriate.

My rating: 96/100
