US artist BEN LINK COLLINS is, at least to my knowledge, an artist making his solo debut with the EP “Five Memories”, his contribution to US label Silber Records ongoing “5 in 5” conceptual series of EPs. Collins is otherwise best known for his company Silent Media Projects.

Collins take on creating a 5 minute long EP with 5 tracks is one rather different from many of the other contributors. While I guess that these are all improvisations, his approach is to shy away from music as such, and instead to use electronic effects and sampled sounds to create cinematic soundscapes.

All of them are intriguing in various degrees, and rather than creating clear cut landscapes that are easy to understand we’re served with five electronic constructions that invites to reflection. Just how much of an impact the song titles, or the description of the memories if you like, should have on how you want to interpret the sounds is difficult to tell. For my sake the impressions I got was rather different to what I’d imagine when reading through the song titles beforehand.

If you find electronic soundscapes utilizing hisses, clicks, sampled sounds of daily life and of animals intriguing, and don’t mind an artist that may or may not add subtle flavorings of more or less ominous synth textures to such excursions, Ben Link Collins “Five Memories” is a five minute and five chapter long journey that will fire up your imagination quite nicely thank you.
