US band WHITE SAILS was formed in 2012, and in January 2013 they released their full length debut album. A few months later they became a new addition to the roster of bands cooperating with specialist UK label Fruits de Mer Records, who released a four track vinyl single with the band in August 2013 on their Regal Crabomophone sublabel.

The single gets of to an impressive start with a cover version of Black Sabbath’s classic Laguna Sunrise. Sporting slowly marching rhythms, a nifty melodic bass motif and dual layered acoustic guitars in this version, supplemented with smooth psychedelic guitar solo motif and careful use of symphonic backdrops. Following this we’re treated to another Black Sabbath tune, the in my opinion aptly named Fluff. Again dual layers of acoustic guitars is a central feature, supplemented by occasional piano details and a carefully drone-tinged guitar motif on this version of the song, with rhythms somewhat more energetic added for the final phase. A pleasant enough experience, and fans of the original should find this one intriguing. The Answer is one of two originals on this single, an enticing affair sporting a recurring dual layered acoustic guitar construction, a fluctuating psychedelic guitar solo motif, with organ and towards the end drum and bass added to the proceedings too for a finale that might be described as toned down majestic and intense in nature. Death On a Pale Horse ends this single on a high note, again with dual layered acoustic guitars, this time with a slight country vibe to them. A darker toned violin of possibly cello adds a darker sheen to the proceedings, occasionally visiting a more majestic expression by way of symphonic backdrops. Most often followed by a return to the basic dual guitar theme. Intriguing and interesting material of the highest quality.

The combination of acoustic guitars and psychedelic textures is a key feature throughout this production, and those who enjoy psychedelic rock set within something of an acoustic context and one sporting acoustic guitars as lead motif providers in particular should fine this single to be well worth checking out further. Good quality stuff, as tends to be the case with productions that comes courtesy of Fruits de Mer Records.
