Band’s History
Flicker have been performing and recording their distinctive brand of music for over ten years. What makes Flicker’s music distinctive? The song writing! Interwoven melody lines and rhythms dynamically combine with intricate arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and the use of the appropriate sound or genre necessary to convey the meaning and feeling of a song.
Ellis Mordecai, (front man and leader of Flicker), started playing with bassist Peter Coussens in the late 1990s. Their friend, Martin Grech, was in the process of recording his debut album “Open Heart Zoo”, and needed some musicians for live work. The gigs showcased songs by Martin and Ellis and included an early version of Out There, a track which appears on the new Flicker album.
When Martin was signed as a solo artist to Island Records, Ellis and Peter decided to continue playing and recruited guitarist Andrew Day and drummer Jimmy Fletcher. Jimmy left and was replaced by Darren Laurie who in turn made way for Vaughan Abrey, Ellis’s brother, which completes the present day line-up.
Band Members
Ellis Mordecai – Vocals, guitar, keyboards – and songwriter.
He is the driving force behind Flicker and the band member who was most heavily involved in the making of the album, in terms of recording, arranging, mixing and producing.
Andrew Day – Guitarist and co-writer.
He and Ellis have formed an incredible songwriting partnership. An equally formidable lyricist, arranger and guitar player.
Vaughan Abrey – Drummer.
The baby of the band, though his youth does not detract from his immense ability behind the drum kit.
Peter Coussens – Bass.
In contrast to Vaughan, Peter is the elder statesman of the group, but you wouldn’t think it to look at him play. He and Vaughan comprise one of the most lethal rhythm sections in recent memory.
The Album
In 2009, they finally decided the songs presented here deserved the widest possible audience, and should be recorded in the best possible quality their budget could stretch to. The budget stretched as far as recording the drums at Runway Studios, Westcott, in the summer of 2009. During these sessions the band were introduced to Marc Joy of Ferndale Productions in North Wales. Recording then switched from Westcott to Wales with Marc taking control of the production. The project spanned several months, progressing here a bit, there a bit, every weekend, until the album was finally mixed and mastered at Aerial Studios in December 2011.
The making of this album has been an extreme labour of love. Considering the years since each song’s inception to the finished product, it’s to the band’s credit they stuck to their guns, because each of these songs have already stood the test of time.
