UK band BLACKTOP DELUXE was formed in 2013, initially as a power trio but at least in it’s current guise now expanded into a four man strong unit under the leadership of composer, vocalist and guitarist Keith Howe. “Presence & Gain” is their second full length production, and was released towards the end of 2015.

Blues based rock is the chosen field of this UK foursome, and their take on it is one that by and large is firmly rooted in US traditions. The core sound they explore is one that should feel familiar to fans of a band such as ZZ Top, and then the earlier ventures of that band in particular. Hard, firm rock with a distinct blues orientation, where the guitar is the key instrument and with something of a southern rock flavoring as an ongoing feature.

Blacktop Deluxe does venture outside of those perimeters on occasion as well however, so this isn’t a strictly one-dimensional production. We get the obligatory blues track of course, as well as the occasional detour into more distinct southern rock territories. but also a more playful affair more closely steeped in the black American music traditions with the cut It Don’t Work Like That, while opening song Crank It Up features a more intense, boogie-driven expression arguably closer to the likes of AC/DC. Perhaps a bit more surprising is the bonus song Man Down, where we’re treated to a more elongated, sophisticated creation more closely aligned towards late 70’s Pink Floyd.

At their best I do find this band to be an interesting lot. They know how to create a compelling and inviting arrangement, have a good ear for effective melodies and does provide enough variety in their chosen field to avoid overly exploring one specific sound and approach. Adding those extra bits and pieces that transforms a good track to a great or even brilliant one isn’t always in place though, but there’s only one track on this disc I’d describe as markedly weaker than the others.

Those with a general interest in bands that hone in on classic blues based hard rock as their chosen field, Blacktop Deluxe’s second CD “Presence & Gain” should be one met with interest, and then in particular by those who know and love vintage ZZ Top and others of a similar nature.
