Drusuna is a Pagan Folk Band from Gallaecia (Northern Portugal), and were formed in 2009 by Sephirus Oakborn and brother Alvahagal with the concept of creating primitive sounds with only organic ethnic musical instruments made from wood, stones, and other natural elements. Apparently there is a new line-up for each project, with Sephirus bringing in who he needs to bring his ideas to reality so consequently he is the only person listed on their website as being in the band. I have been able to uncover that the otherworldly vocals are provided by Rose Avalon from Ritual Duir (thanks Facebook), but apart from that I have no idea who does what on this single. That is a real shame as I would like to provide some credits as this is dynamic and interesting throughout. With a Jew’s Harp setting up a drone, soon joined by an acoustic guitar, bodhran-style drumming, and then Avalon’s vocals over the top this soon becomes something that feels more akin to Native American invocations. Many more instruments join the throng, but always with the Jew’s Harp and now didgeridoo creating a backing for some incredible cries. This is compelling stuff, and I look forward to hearing a full album as this is taking traditional Western folk into whole new areas.
