Auckland-based Investigator are back with their second single from the forthcoming album, which they liken to a combination of Weezer and Pixies and they have that description pretty much nailed. It is somewhat slow for a rock number, but somehow it all works well with the picked guitars and everyone relaxing into the pop rock number. With piano underneath the sound, following the harmonies which provides additional depth, it allows the staccato guitars to provide the perfect backing for Adrian Drew’s vocals. The chorus sees him moving effortlessly into falsetto, while the guitar solos are delicate and restrained, totally in keeping with the music. In fact, the solo reminds me of the one by Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister) on the “Stars” charity single as while everyone else blasted off to show just how quickly they could play he took the absolute opposite approach and used just the notes that were needed.

Little tricks, such as slowing the guitars to take a break and have a bar with just the rhythm section, are highly effective and the end result is a song which gets into the brain and stays there with some ease. Yet another highly polished number from Investigator, and I look forward to the album with real interest.
