Signal Red may be a newish band, but they can trace their roots back to 2013 when guitarist Steve Grocott was at a loose end due to his band Sevendayz having folded, and he contacted vocalist Lee Small (Phenomena, Lionheart) as he had heard so much about him, mainly from the self-titled Shy album that appeared in 2011. Grocott then became involved in Ten and plans were put on hold until they were able to work together on ‘Under The Radar’ which came out in 2018. Now the duo are back with the second album, joined by special guests Steve Newman (bass and backing vocals (Newman/Compass)) and drummer Daniel Zaman, while Steve also provides keyboards and mixed the release while it was mastered by Steve Mann (MSG/Lionheart/Liar).

Given the background of all those involved, it is of no surprise whatsoever that this is a melodic hard rock album of the highest order. Small has a huge reputation from his different bands and projects over the years, and his bluesy vocals yet again show why he is in such high demand. He is given the opportunity to pour his emotion into songs such as “Insomnia”, which commences with just him and some delicate piano, before it takes off and becomes a belter. There is an edge to the guitars throughout this album which shows this is a British melodic rock album, as opposed to something from the other side of the pond and is all the better for it. Every song is a winner with great hooks and loads of passion, topped with a superb rhythm section, great guitars and solos, and vocals to die for. Escape Music have been delivering quality melodic rock albums for quarter of a century and the label shows no sign at all of slowing down just yet, as this is another winner that fans of the genre really do need to seek out asap.
