Here we have the third release from The Justin Rothberg Group, which comprises Justin on guitar and mandolin, along with Todd Groves (woodwind), Jon Price (bass), Hiroyuki Matsuura (drums) and Andy O’Neill (percussion). Unlike many jazz acts, which are often put together for just a single release, this is a band, with everyone apart from newbie Jon Price also playing on the last album, ‘Old Business’. What we have here is instrumental music from a highly rehearsed band, who then recorded live in the studio so they could bounce off each other. Here we have twelve Rothberg originals, all rooted in jazz with a Latin tinge, but covering a multitude of styles, and Rothberg has set the band so that everyone has their chance to shine.

Take “Piece Of Mind” for example, here we have a wonderfully Latin number, with drums and percussion setting the mood, bass providing the melodic backdrop, and then Groves and Rothberg taking turns to provide some beautiful solos. They are always in keeping with the music as opposed to showing just how clever they are, and that finesse and lightness is sheer delight. When Rothberg brings out his mandolin for “Hotel, Show, Repeat” we get taken on another joyous ride, one which always makes me think of Mardi Gras, as he combines with Groves to create something quite special. One is never sure quite where the album is going to lead, just that it is always going to be interesting and the journey an enjoyable one. Rothberg has a long history of working in musical theatre, as well as working with some outstanding artists, such as Petula Clark, while also undertaking some classical music as well, so he has a very broad understanding of different styles, and all this comes together in this album which is thoroughly enjoyable.
