It was through a happy accident that I came across Volts last year, as that night I was supposed to be at another gig altogether which had been cancelled, so as I had planned to be out anyway decided to go out and see this band from Christchurch who were playing a rare show in Auckland. I was talking to Rock FM DJ Lee Weir beforehand, and he told me I needed to describe singer Lorna Coll as a six-foot vixen, and that she rocked, really rocked, which certainly left me intrigued. The rest of the band comprise hard-hitting drummer Dan Chisholm, bassist/singer Victoria Knopp and twin guitarists Andrew Knopp and Marc Royal. Their last single “When You Go” ended up in my Top 5 for 2022 so I have been waiting for this one with great interest, and finally it is here, “Bleeding Hearts”.

It is a rocking commercial number with the vocals I have come to expect from Lorna while Victoria is right there behind her in the chorus: this is not double tracking, as the guys tend to stay on the edges during shows to let the two ladies take centre stage and when they are singing together they really are like no other band on the circuit, and it is no wonder they have been in such high demand for festivals etc. The first time I played this I did think it was a little lightweight and they were missing some bottom end, as Victoria is often providing a counter melody, yet the more I played it the more it grew on me, and I was soon singing along. This is good time music which reminds the listener why they started listening to the rock in the first place as there is nothing pretentious about this, and instead is all about letting your hair down and having a good time. Play this a few times and I can guarantee you will be singing along as well.
