According to singer Michael Murphy, “Goddess is love, it’s lust, sex, desire, devotion, adoration and hopeless, eternal connection. It’s both crippling affection and white, hot eternal love. It’s the dizzying realization that this devotion is infinite, both eye opening and blinding at the same time, it will burn as hot as the sun but also leave you chilled to the bone. This unending connection will lead you to the ends of the earth, through time and space with an energy that simply cannot be destroyed.” It was the last song written when they were in LA with producer, Gladius James, and came together in a matter of hours.

WBW are here combining the dramatic percussive attack of Karl Woodmans along with sweeping keyboards of Oli Lyons and the crunching guitars of Davie Wong as the song builds to its dramatic complex. It starts gently with synthesised vocals, Mikey coming in gently and higher, until the crunch hits, and then we find the vocals are being delivered in an almost rap style, with the guitars there but in the background. When we get to the bridge they have disappeared altogether until it is time for the chorus and then we get layers of vocals, where Mikey sings sweetly in some parts and provides the hard rough edge in others. There is a real commerciality here, as the band continue to mix dance, pop and rock to create something which has been inspired by the likes of Linkin Park but taken in a quite different direction.

With millions of plays on YouTube, more than 100,000 subscribers, and more than 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify it is time for WBW to spread their wings outside Aotearoa and will soon be playing in Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, and the UK. Having seen these guys multiple times, I can tell you that is a show not to miss.
