Tenor saxophonist Livio Almeida is back with his first solo album since 2016’s ‘Action and Reaction’, this time working with Misael Silvestre (keyboards), Daniel Castro (bass), and Pedro Almeida (drums). Recorded in Brasília, his hometown and Brazil’s capital, he says “This music is deeply rooted in my Brazilian tradition. It’s a synthesis of my cultural experience as a Brazilian immigrant in New York.” The eight songs on this set include six originals and two Brazilian standards as he seamlessly blends Brazilian and South American styles with jazz which at times is exciting and scintillating and at others more thoughtful and delicate.
Recorded in January this year, there is no doubt a lot of work went into the sessions with each musician knowing and understanding their place and space being a huge component. There is never a feeling of anyone overplaying or overstaying their welcome, but instead we get a comforting warmth from all those involved as they take the Latin scene and combine it seamlessly. One of my daughters has been touring South America for the last five months and she keeps sending me videos of music she has come across in the street and bars, and it feels like the Latin style is deep within the souls of not only the players but those dancing and reacting to it as well, and that is very much the case here as this album feels totally effortless and full of Summer joy. A delight from beginning to end for any lovers of soft, controlled and well thought out jazz.
