One might expect the title to refer to the musicians involved on this recording, but it is subtitled “Me, Myself and the Piano”. Chaubert provides piano and trumpet, playing both at the same time, and is accompanied by bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Jon Di Fiore, with percussionist Luis Quintero guesting on two tracks. The album was recorded live without overdubs, with the main melodic lead being the trumpet while piano provides simple accompaniment (he does only have one free hand) for what is an incredibly relaxed and laid-back album. It is perfect for a slow Sunday afternoon, but then only really as background as opposed to something t be really listened to.
The bass is sublime, providing nice counterpoint, but there are too much in the way of cymbals from the drummer and the mix has them too high. This feels very much as if a CD which has been recorded for people to purchase at Chaubert’s gigs, as it has that low key feeling, and I can imagine the trio playing in hotels and bars as opposed to halls. That he has a wonderful tone on trumpet is never in doubt, but I cannot see this being an album which people would want to sit and listen to, but possibly have on gently in the background at a soiree.
