Based in Honolulu, Groovology was formed during the pandemic and comprises Aaron Aranita on woodwinds and piano, David Yamasaki on guitar, Ernie Provencher on bass, and Scott Shafer on drums. 10 of the 11 songs are original compositions from each member of the band and they move through different styles of jazz which often incorporate themes from South America. They have definitely chosen the right name for the band as there is a groove in everything they do, whether it is laid back or more driving and a real feeling of togetherness as they are incredibly tight. This is music which definitely puts the listener in a good place as it is mellow and enjoyable throughout.
Aaron, providing two different melodic instruments (as well as composing four of the songs), doesn’t overplay but instead takes lead in a respectful manner or provides great support for David, while the rhythm section know when to move out on their own or when to keep it solid. One of the most interesting songs is “Groovology” itself which contains a wonderful bass solo (honest), yet this number was actually written by David and not Ernie, which one might expect as a bass solo is not exactly de rigeur. The guitarist created a piece which keeps the same basic melody, but they all get to show their skills, a nice touch. Gentle and warm, this album is a delight from beginning to end.
