This three-track EP finds Polish pianist Maja Babyszka working with British woodwind virtuoso Gilad Atzmon and Greek free improviser drummer Nikos Sidirokastritis to create something which has its roots in live composition but is definitely more than “just” that. One gets the impression that these three pieces are combinations of improvisation and rehearsed material, but it is quite possible that the material which has been rehearsed/scored has actually previously come out of improvisations. There is too much complexity and togetherness, bringing together of different melodies and rhythms for this to be improvised on the spot, but it contains that spontaneity and joy. This is avant jazz which brings in folk and world influences to create something which is vital and accessible, with space being an important fourth element and each musician understanding their place and never over playing but instead keeping it tight and controlled, building on others and never detracting from them.

This is the second release I have heard through Aesthetiko Musicians Collective in recent months, and I certainly hope there is more to come as each have been a wonderful discovery and exploration.
