Having only recently released their first single from the new album, here we have Written By Wolves back with a very different take on that song, which has been opening their live sets over the last year. Singer Michael Murphy explained it like this, “we wanted to give our loyal fans and followers something more to make this release feel special and to say thank you for their unwavering support. So, we took the opportunity to delve into a part of our sound that hasn’t been front and centre for a long time. This Alt Version of “Give ‘em Hell” is industrial and dirty and brings the electronic side of our sound to the fore to give fans a completely different audio experience to what they may have become used to from us.”

Just over two minutes long, for the most part guitarists Davie and Bahador are sat having a rest, allowing drummer Karl and synth player/percussionist Oli to set the stage for Mikey to place his vocals against. It is interesting to hear this when compared to the original as it shows a very different side of the band, and even though the backing is electronic, the warmth and emotion of the vocals shows a very different side indeed. This is not something I would recommend for someone looking to discover one of Aotearoa’s greatest bands, but for those of us who are already fans it is an interesting aside while we wait for the album.
