Cyprus as a holiday destination island, gives the overall impressions that the locals have an overwhelming love only for traditional Cypriot/ Greek music. Almost, certainly the archetypal holiday making visitor is presented with endless streams of bars, taverns and restaurants hosting a typically common musical face of bussoki driven Zorbas styled dance tunes. And then the club crazed holidaying youth faring no better being attracted to a never-ending bombardment of foreign DJ manipulated repetitive chill out dance mixed music .However, unbeknown to most tourists is a phenomenally active heavy rock scene spread around a whole host of rock venues tucked away in odd ancient back street corners of all the major cities. One such venue is the ‘Savino’, a famous old bar located in the Finikoudes area of Larnaca, which in 2010 shaped  its spacious charm into that of being a premier  rock venue . Being quite reminisce of the London Marque it is an atmospheric theatre for rock music attracting both Cypriot and international bands through its hallowed doors.

On Saturday 9th of March 2024,  I had the real pleasure of joining the merry throng of rock music aficionados to witness the presence of  ‘Nicosian’ super band Fuse. Fuse are in all respects a super band having assembled a group of extraordinary talented musicians. One gets the impression that, because of the high level of collective talent on display, the members have been individually head hunted from the cream of Cypriot rock talent.

Fuse’s front man Francois Micheletto’is the consummate professional  having been a professional singer since 2005 with a whole host of Cypriot based rock bands, such as Unreal, Triple Jam, Gnwstoi Agnwstoi, Marianne’s Wish and more lately Minus One with whom he represented Cyprus in the Eurovision song contest in 2016, with the song Alter Ego. This guy really is the focal point of with his extensive dynamic vocal style working his way energetically through an extensive programme of heavy rock music with much passion and style.

Besides being the Axe man with ‘Fuse;  Louis Syrimis (Infected Syren, Blynd & Zivanished) has a  a Ba in Music Technology/Popular music  and an MA in Musicology he is also a music producer. Such abilities evident in his expansive guitar style in which he creates an startling assortment of guitar sounds which he cleverly incorporates into the structure of the music. And so, otherwise familiar rock anthems are given a treated guitar face lift by the incorporation of these unique guitar proliferations.

Bassist Antonis Loizidis also a previous member of Minus One has been performing with various bands since 1996, the likes of  Charis&Panos Katsimixas, Stavros Tou Notou. Clearly there is a magical relationship that has been formed between Francois, Antonis and drummer Kypros.

Completing the percussive section and engine room of ‘Fuse’ is Kypros Karaviotis, a qualified lawyer, who shares both his prowess as a drummer and lead vocalist with other heavy rock bands ‘Ovumseed; and KRAAMA . Kypros is a technically proficient drummer employing an amazing array of aggressive rhythms delivered with a cohesive melodic style.

Looking at the line up in some detail here, it is easy to draw the conclusion that the band has been assembled to meld together some of the best musical talent in Cyprus. They are an altogether tight unit performing a volatile all action set of heavy rock covers and some of their, slightly more progressive orientated original compositions. One thing’s for sure the crowd adore this lively bunch of talented musicians and in themselves contributed Cypriot Band
