Apparently, Cytolysis is defined as the destruction of a cell that occurs when an antibody binds to an antigen on the cell’s surface, leading to the activation of the complement sequence or triggering cytotoxicity by K cells, resulting in the destruction of the cell, so now you know. It’s also a great name for a technical death metal band, and this is the second album from Darren Cesca, drummer with Goratory, Eschaton and previously Deeds Of Flesh. Cesca provides all instrumentation and most of the vocals, although he does have some guests in that regard in the shape of Brian Forgue (Syphilic etc), Adam Mason (Goratory), Mac Smith (Apogean, Eschaton) and Flo Butcher (Tortured, Vile). Mind you, I think this is far more about getting your mates involved as opposed to needing a singer as one of the highlights of this album is the brutality of his own growls.
Interestingly, there are a lot of tempo shifts within this, and for the most part it is played somewhat more slowly than one would expect from this style of music, but it definitely works, especially as when it does speed up the contrast is quite marked. The music certainly does the cover art (care of Vladimir Cebakov (Six Feet Under, 1914, DeadHead etc.) proud, and there is much here which makes one think of the early Nineties scene. I also need to call out the production (also handled by Cesca) as it is spot on and there is good separation within the wall of sound with the vocals always nicely to the fore. For fans of Cannibal Corpse, Incinerate.
