What we have here is a remastered version of an album which was released in 2007, but I didn’t hear it at the time and I am very pleased indeed to have it now as this is a delight for anyone interested in hugely complex and complicated jazz with wonderful arrangements and harmonies. Given the title of the album, and the huge attack of opener “Tyner Town” I was convinced that Person was the drummer until I realised he provides soprano, alto and tenor sax along with flute. What makes this album such a delight are not only the masterful performances by all involved, or the compositions, but the arrangements and the way that everyone takes every opportunity to demonstrate their chops but never to the detriment of anyone else or to the music.
It is worth mentioning all those involved as everyone has a massively key role in this, Ingrid Jensen (trumpet), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Daniel Sadownick (congas, percussion), Cary DeNigris (electric guitar), Jarod Kashkin (piano, electric piano), Adam Armstrong (acoustic bass), Peter O’Brien (drums). I do not know why this album has been chosen for remastering and reissue, especially given it was also on Distinction, but they have even given it a new cover. All I can say is that if his other albums are anything like this then I need to hear more as here we have a selfless bandleader and composer who has scored a wonderful set which is heavy on the rhythm and high on the enjoyment factor and is one to which I will often be returning.
