UK band KILL FOR EDEN was formed back in 2009, and released their self-titled debut album in the spring of 2013. Around 6 months later, in November 2013, they followed up this production with this three track EP, named after the opening song “Living on Mars”.
The main song here is pulled from their debut album, and while not among the songs I was most impressed about myself it is a good composition revolving around a beefed up hair metal sound with staccato stop and start guitar riffs and an excellent, snarling chorus section where lead vocalist Lyla D’Souza are given ample room to explore the more aggressive parts of her vocal repertoire.
The other two tracks at hand are both new creations, and fairly different sounding entities at that. The Dome alternates between calm, atmospheric laden guitars with appropriate soft lead vocals and a pacier, darker and aggressive punk-oriented section where both guitars and lead vocals contribute to the punk associations.
Shoot Me concludes this EP on a more elegant note, sporting verse parts of the kind that should sound rather familiar to fans of a band like Garbage, paired off with a powerful but compact riff driven chorus section that is closer to more regular hard rock or melodic heavy metal in terms of stylistic expression.
All in all an enjoyable three track EP, and one that merits a check by those who tend to enjoy hard rock with metal tendencies (or vice versa) that has a mainstream orientation yet manage to retain a kick ass quality to the moods and atmospheres explored.
My rating: 80/100
