Here we have the live album recorded on their ‘The Final Ride’ tour, and although they released what was supposed to be their last ever studio album at the end of last year, I note that since then George has again changed the rest of the band. The line-up here is of course George Lynch on guitar, along with vocalist Gabriel Colón, bassist Jaron Gulino, and drummer Jimmy D’Anda. The mix has been kept nice and raw, which gives us a much heavier and atmospheric approach than one might expect and while better recorded than bootlegs has that same feel.
Given this was the tour to end all tours (don’t be too sure of that) we get wide range of sons, not only from the more recent albums, along with some classic Dokken, including two from the wonderful ‘Under Lock and Key’ which I bought on its release more than 40 years ago, namely “Lightning Strikes Again” and “It’s Not Love”. The band are in fine form, but one cannot help but feel that the issues between and George and Don Dokken, along with bandmates Jeff Pilson and Mick Brown, were one of the main reasons while the classic line-up were so dynamic and essential. Neither group has reached their full potential due to the missing chemistry and while this is a fun ride it feels like an attempt to revisit past highlights as opposed to anything dynamically new. Fun, but never essential as one can tell from the ineffective beck and call with the audience. Still, the material may not always be what we might wish for, but George is still a master of hard rock guitar.
