My Rating 75/100
‘Smoke Burst’ is certainly an interesting album being a mixture of laid-back blues guitar interposed with beautifully administered keyboards. This is the fourth album released by Mario Rossi and whilst the format follows the usual tried and tested blues arrangements there is sufficient variation amongst the songs to be both interesting and enjoyable throughout. Such enjoyment is exacerbated by a star-studded backing of musicians and vocalists in support. Unfortunately, the press release does not make it very clear as to the full list of these guest contributors.
Probably the pinnacle of this eight-track album is the opening track Smoke / Burst where Martin achieves a beautifully soulful sound and together with the harmonic female vocals and melancholy lyrics is sure to be a future classic track.
The support throughout is of the highest caliber with amazing bass and superb drumming which together provide a firm foundation of rhythm and direction.
Mario is a very dexterous musician and, to use an oft-used expression makes his instrument sway and sing with superb chord sequences and crispy tones floating with an outstanding melodic timbre and especially bursting forth from within the cover the more genial backdrop of the keyboard benefaction.
