Dr Richard Michelson (stage name: MOTU which stands for Music Of The Universe), is back with his 23rd album. On this he provides vocals, slide dobro, electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, harmonica, bass and pedal steel and is joined by Dee Michelson on vocals, Rich Fry on vocals, electric and acoustic guitars with Ed Modzel on drums. What we have here is a mix of American roots, blues, rock, and folk, normally (but not always) with Richard’s gravelly vocals at the forefront as he layers accompaniment behind.
The album is an interesting listen, but throughout it has the feeling of something self-produced with the mix not being where it should be and the different instruments often pulling apart as opposed to gelling together. The levels are all over the place with the vocals too high and the electric guitar often too far in the background and distinct separation which in this environment just does not work. It is an album which contains some good ideas, both musically and lyrically (which covers multiple serious subjects), yet often mises the mark. That Richard is a fine musician is never in doubt, and I would love to hear more traditional roots blues like “You’re Just a Pile of Crap”, but without the drums and a more dynamic bass. I am glad I heard it but doubt I will return for more.
