I recently reviewed the album by Adam Jurczynski, which includes vocals on one song by Malgorzata “Margo” Szkoda-Hreczuch. I was intrigued by her vocals so was determined to find out more and am now listening to the debut album by Moyra which was released last year. Margo formed the band in 2017, and I am guessing she is still very much in control given that since this release the line-up has totally changed apart from her. I have no idea why that is, but it could not have been anything connected with this release as this is mighty fine to my ears. They are mixing melodic death metal with power metal and other genres, always with Margo firmly in control. She is one of those singers who can growl in a way which almost seems impossible for a woman yet can also sing with plenty of melody and power when the time is right.
I am at a loss to understand why it took six years for the band to release their first album, as this never comes across as a debut as it is full of passion, power and rage with everyone firing on all cylinders and Margo front and centre. Mixed and mastered by Przemysłav Nowak he has managed to walk the fine line between being over-polished and letting the band’s rawness really shine through, the result being an album which has room for a ballad, contains some samples where it makes sense, but allows the instruments being fully heard and appreciated so while the guitars crunch, they are provided the foundation by the drums and bass. If it wasn’t for hearing Margo on Adam’s album then I would never have come across this band, but I am very glad indeed that I have. Their Facebook and website are very active, and I am sure this is a band and singer who are going to have quite an impact on the scene. Anyone into powering metal with female vocals needs to seek this out.
