It is always quite special when you come across an album that for some reason strikes a definite chord with you. An album that you have picked at random and, for some reason, is perfectly timed to suit your mood or frame of mind at the time. This was the case when picking up the ‘Remi Orts-Project –Reverse the Universe’ at a time when I was, for some reason feeling just a bit low. It is an album full of lovely vocalised sentiments wrapped up in a beautifully woven framework of the melodic musical delight of enchanting keyboards and beautifully arranged guitar. Music of course is well known for being the vehicle for transporting emotions and engaging the playback of those past and treasured memories. ‘Reverse the Universe’ is, absolutely, an album that evokes a warm glow throughout. Also, each of the seven songs on this album has its own identity and is quite different in structure that is despite all of the material being of a relative adagio tempo. There is something too quite beautiful with English lyrics being sung with a delicate French accent. Although it would be interesting to hear the songs sung in Remi’s native tongue.
The arrangements have been exquisitely assembled and pieced together with absolute perfection. The music flows so delicately with wonderful piano accompaniment and then with every song containing its own individual guitar break that brings the music to an apex of delightful conclusion. Magnificent to the extreme.
‘Rémi Orts’ is a composer-arranger and multi-instrumentalist from the south of France who despite a back catalogue of epic proportions seems relatively unknown outside his native France. This statement though seems unbelievable considering the fine quality and delicacy of his songs. However, as a composer, his biography reveals that he works and writes for numerous artists, as well as being involved with a rock band and other commercial enterprises.
Summary: A delightful album in its entirety, with dreamy music and interesting guitar breaks. If any criticism could be levied it would be that at 32 minutes it is rather short by today’s standards.
