US band SMASH FASHION have been around for a good few years, with three full length albums and the same number of singles to their name released between 2006 and 2020 from what I can see. The single “Got Da Hee Bee Gee Bees (at CBGBs)” is their most recent production, and was released through Canadian label Yeah Right! in the summer of 2020.

The title track, besides possibly referencing a book about Jewish punk, is a nifty little affair with it’s roots in 70’s hard rock, with undertones of garage rock and a wee bit of punk rock. A touch of Sweet perhaps, with undercurrents from The Cramps and Sex Pistols. And while the song mainly is a 70’s hard rocker, the roots of rock music is something of a feature here too, with some elements here and there documenting that there are aspects of rock music that have stayed on ever since the 1950’s.

The B-side of this single see Smash Fashion transforming Elton John’s ‘Bennie & the jets’ into quite the playful and engaging 70’s rocker, with a bass-line driving the song quite nicely indeed, subtle guitar details adding nuance and inspiration with a solid delivery from vocalist Deering as the icing on the cake. A good song, covered in a nice, playful and engaging manner here.

Smash Fashion isn’t a band I’ve encountered all that often, but from the sounds delivered on this single at least they strike me as a band that should appeal to fans of 70’s hard rock in general, as well as people with an affection for the bands existing inside the triangle of garage rock, punk rock and hard rock. A solid single by a solid band.

My rating: 80/100
