This band created quite a stir when they started, as this was a new project featuring Leif Edling (Candlemass), but after the debut single “Into The Crypt” came out in 2021 there was nothing more until earlier this year when more singles were released. Now there is no mention of Edling, as while singer Pepper is still there she has now been joined by Rigor Mortimer (bass), Danne McKenzie (drums), Dave McKenzie (guitar) and Floke (keyboards). They still describe themselves as doom, but to my ears this is much more like NWOBHM with some doom elements here and there. Apparently this is a concept album all about a metal priestess, which is a persona portrayed by Pepper onstage, but there is very much the feeling this is a middle of the road project which is looking for inspiration. There are plenty of times when they remind me of early Incubbus Succubus with quite a Gothic feel, but with less inspiration. This metal which in many ways is quite commercial, as it never really has the balls or clout to really cut through.
There are some early Seventies inspirations here and there, with Black Widow being a case in point, but while this can be enjoyable (tracks such as “Night of the Devil” being an obvious shot at radio play), there is definitely the feeling that this is an opportunity missed for the most part. It is never really heavy enough, there is never enough passion, and one cannot help but wonder if this is what they are really like in concert or if they have been somewhat watered down in production. The press release is in full colour, and there are three photos, but they are all of Pepper and none of the rest of the band and it is almost as if the metal priestess, who has a striking image, is what is being concentrated on as opposed to the band and the music. That the cover art is a cartoon is somehow quite apt.
