UK band THE PARASITIC TWINS are a fairly new addition to the metal scene in the UK. The band revolves around key members Max Watt and Dom Smith, and so far they have two singles to their name, in addition to the EP “All That’s Left To Do Now Is Sleep With Each Other” which collects both singles and adds a third track to the proceedings. The EP was released through the label Man Demolish Records in the fall of 2018, a label I would guess is the band’s own label.
Rather surprisingly for an EP with music that have doom metal as one of the inspirations, this is a short and concise affair. Very short, as a matter of fact, as the three cuts here clock in at a total length of less than 6 minutes.
What we do get is one slice of metal-oriented, harder edged punk and two slices of darker, monumental doom metal with a slight hardcore flavoring. The latter of which for me is the most interest parts of this production.
What makes this band stand out, in a good as well as a not so good manner I guess, is that they have opted to go for a dark, grimy and dirty sound, filled with distortion and twisted instrument sounds, all explored in what comes across as a strikingly lo-fi context. I am reminded of the good, old demo cassettes from back in the 1980’s here. The sound is obviously miles better than an old demo tape, but there is a focus on the simple and the primitive, doom metal that meets hardcore in primal surroundings if you like.
Opening cut ‘Massive’ is the shining gem here in my book. A well made and catchy song, and one that most likely will appeal outside of the presumed niche audience that will appreciate this lo-fi blend of hardcore and doom metal. That being said, niche audience stands out as key description for me as far as this EP is concerned, and those who have positive associations to the thought of a lo-fi, twisted mix of hardcore and doom metal will make out the greater parts of it I assume.
