UK label FRUITS DE MER RECORDS is one I have tried to cover as good as I can for a few years now. I’m trailing behind on covering their releases due to pressing obligations elsewhere, but I’ve finally been able to have a go at the promos they sent me back in October. The first of these is this 7 inch vinyl single.
The A side features Superfjord covering John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. In this take a song that has a circulating, steady rhythm guitar and bass driven theme as the foundation, highlighted in brief passages sporting spoken words on top, in between elongated passages of twisting, turning and weaving tapestries of guitar soloing, reverberating guitar riffs, psych-dripping organ details and even some frail, nervous post rock guitars at some point unless I’m much mistaken. A true psychedelic delight in this version, and perhaps not all that instantly recognizable by Coltrane fans.
The B side features Earthling Society covering Alice Coltrane’s Journey In Satchidananda. This is a rather different kind of affair altogether, basically sporting subtle electronic effects as a frail coating over distanced instrumentation, or music that sounds like it’s played a distance away if you like. This muted atmosphere creates a distinct atmosphere, and the manner in which the dark, booming bass guitar and the vintage psychedelic oriented guitars interact here is more of a hypnotic, repetitive affair, with a more dominant and expressive guitar solo given more room in the final part. A splendid piece of cosmic-flavored, psychedelic rock enhanced by way of clever effects with a mesmerizing end result.
While I haven’t been given a promo of that part, this single is apparently delivered with a bonus CD sporting 70 additional minutes of music. As I haven’t listened to that material I really can’t tell if that is a worthwhile bonus feature or not, but I can at least vouch for the high quality of this single: Two tracks and 15 minutes of brilliant, psychedelic rock.
My rating: 100/100
